WHAT WE DO

Why Our Work Matters

“Because of Cambodia’s special history, treating trauma at the grassroots level is even more important than in other countries. Mental health stigma is still high, and the number of trained professionals is limited.”

WHAT WE DO

Our 4 Core Areas of Work

EMDR is active in four fields According to the Mental Health Strategic Plan 2023-2032 of the Cambodian Ministry of Health, the activities of EMDR Cambodia go beyond the treatment by the EMDR therapy method. Our activities include treatments, trainings, awareness raising and research.

Treatment

  • EMDR methods

EMDR has been recognized by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 2004 as an effective treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The method took its first journey to Cambodia in 2008. In the meantime, a number of Cambodian psychologists and psychiatrists were trained in EMDR both in the country and abroad. By the end of 2011, three EMDR practitioners were selected to take another level of EMDR training to become EMDR supervisors. An initiative idea to meet up all the professionally trained Cambodian psychologists and psychiatrists in EMDR to set up an association for the sake of mental health improvement emerged at the same time. Today, there are 35 certified EMDR practitioners and seven supervisors working in Cambodia, ten of whom with EMDR Cambodia. 40 practitioners are currently in training. About half of the therapists of EMDR Cambodia are seniors and accredited as EMDR Clinical Consultants/Supervisors from Europe. They carry out around 300 EMDR therapies per year in the centers in Phnom Penh, Battambang and Siem Riep. The treatment is free. Participants are asked to make a donation according to their financial means. So far, EMDR Cambodia’s therapists since the end of the COVID pandemic have treated around 3000 traumatized people per year and trained 600 professionals and paraprofessionals in the country in EMDR practices.

  • Other forms of therapies

While EMDR therapy is our core activity, several therapists of EMDR Cambodia also have expertise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma Focus Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Family Therapy, and Art Therapy. They use their know-how according to the needs of the clients.

Training

On the one hand, EMDR trains professionals with a master’s degree in psychology or psychiatrists to become EMDR practitioners. However, the organization also offers training on various aspects of mental health to numerous institutions in different sectors. These are institutions that are experiencing a sharp rise in mental illness in the country and therefore want to train their staff: From local clinics and hospitals (paraprofessionals) to private companies, local authorities and NGOs, religious leaders, social workers and school staff. Depending on the number of training levels, the courses range from a few days to several months or years.
After the training, participants can either offer EMDR therapy to their target group or clients (EMDR professionals), provide basic counseling (paraprofessionals) or carry out basic measures such as psychological first aid in their community and advise people where they can seek help for mental health problems.

Awareness Raising

People with mental health problems still suffer from society’s many prejudices. EMDR is therefore committed to raising awareness at all levels – especially in the communities. The activities in this field include workshops, training courses, presentations and the distribution of various educational materials.
EMDR is active in awareness raising in every community where it carries out trainings. But the organization also visits communities purely for this reason. In 2024, EMDR reached out to approx. 1000 people in different provinces all over the country.

Research

There is a lack of specific statistics on the situation concerning mental health in Cambodia. Wherever EMDR works, it therefore collects data in order to make them accessible for academic institutions and researchers as well as state institutions. Every year, EMDR Cambodia publishes 1-2 scientific articles on relevant platforms accessible to interested stakeholders. Careful handling of the data is a matter of course.

Scientific research carried out or supported by current and former EMDR Cambodia’s staff:
